When Eadlyn became the first princess of Illéa to hold her own Selection, she didn’t think she would fall in love with any of her thirty-five suitors. She spent the first few weeks of the competition counting down the days until she could send them all home. But as events at the palace force Eadlyn even further into the spotlight, she realizes that she might not be content remaining alone.
Eadlyn still isn’t sure she’ll find the fairytale ending her parents did twenty years ago. But sometimes the heart has a way of surprising you…and soon Eadlyn must make a choice that feels more impossible—and more important—than she ever imagined.
I read ‘The Selection’ series a few years ago so I’m unable to write a detailed review of it. However, I do remember loving ‘The Selection’ trilogy and Prince Maxon. He is my ultimate bias in this entire series. Eikko, Hale and the rest of the suitors aren’t able to replace him. I’m sure every girl would wish to have a devoted and loving husband such as Maxon.
Here is a quick breakdown for those who have yet to read this series. ‘The Selection’ series consists of 5 novels. The first 3 novels follow America Singer where she got chosen to be one of the candidates for the competition, to win Prince Maxon’s heart and become the princess. The 4th and final novel follows Eadlyn, *ahem SPOILERS ALERT! America & Maxon’s daughter*, where she held her own competition to find a husband.
I didn’t really enjoy reading The Heir, 4th novel in the series, as I find Eadlyn to be pretty spoiled and pampered. As such, I didn’t like her personality. Moreover, I wasn’t able to connect with any of the suitors as I had difficulty differentiating them apart. However, I’m surprised that I actually enjoyed reading The Crown. One of the reasons is the narrowing down of suitors to the remaining 5. I’m able to see more of these 5 guys in action and fall in love with their unique and quirky personalities. I expected one of the suitors to be a douche bag and is just pretending to be a ‘good guy’ to win the Eadlyn’s heart and become a prince. I guess Eadlyn is
very extremely lucky to be able to meet such kind-hearted and humble suitors.
I love Eadlyn’s growth throughout the novel. She has grown so much from being a spoiled princess to a Queen which places her people’s needs before her own happiness. For that, she has earned my respect. A possible reason would be the competition. After giving her exposure to the public eyes and opinions, she is finally able to hear and experience first handed what the public perceives her as. It is only after Eadlyn found out the public’s perception of her that resulted in her change of heart and she decided to work hard to improve herself so her subjects will acknowledge her.
The romance in this novel is well written and planned out. I’m unable to guess who is going to win Eadlyn’s heart till near the very end. I was making guesses throughout the novel who Eadlyn might end up with and yes, my guesses were all wrong. I’m totally caught by surprise that she and *ahem* actually have such a strong chemistry.
One of the reasons why I love Eadlyn’s perspective more than America’s is because Eadlyn’s perspective is told in the shoes of the person that is holding the competition instead of the candidate. I expected America to end up with Maxon at the end because she is the main protagonist and it was pretty obvious that she and Maxon have feelings for each other. On the other hand, Eadlyn being the main protagonist in the 2nd half of the series makes it harder for readers to guess which suitor is going to end up with her. I always love a hint of mystery and challenge so I have fun guessing Eadlyn’s future husband. 😀
I love Kile so much! I was rooting for Eadlyn x Kile since the start of the novel. Kile is such a sweet and nice guy though he was an ass in the beginning. I love designing and looking at buildings so Kile having a huge interest in building and designing buildings definitely makes me love him even more! Henri is an amazing guy too. If there isn’t the language barrier between him and Eadlyn, I have a feeling that Henri will sweep Eadlyn off her feet. I’m glad Eadlyn ends up with Eikko, I love his birth name much more than Erik so I’ll stick with that. Though I didn’t see that coming, the chemistry between the two of them is undeniable. Eikko is a really down to earth and humble guy. I can envision him being an amazing prince consort alongside Eadlyn. 🙂
